This is undoubtedly the most beautiful and deadliest insect: Hanmyo, or Japanese tiger beetle (Cicindela japonica). As larvae, they lie in ambush in burrows in the soil to supplement their diet of live insects. As adults, they use these large jaws to feed on other insects. I've never witnessed the action myself, though. On this day, I photographed it when it appeared on the forest path in the north of Kyoto City.
