エナガとビワコカタカイガラモドキ：Enaga, Long-tailed tit (Aegithalos caudatus) feeding at riverbank

エナガの一群がヨシ原で餌探しです。この一群にメジロが混じっていました。エナガは日本で一番嘴の短い鳥です。鞘をこじ開けるのはなかなか大変そうです。

A flock of enagas, long-tailed tit was looking for food in the reed field. A white-throated bunting on which I posted several days ago was also in the group. An enaga is the shortest-billed bird in Japan. They earnestly try to pry open the sheath.

メジロとビワコカタカイガラモドキ：Mejiro, warbling white-eye (Zosterops japonicus) feeding at riverbank

先般スズメとベニマシコがビワコカタカイガラモドキを食べている様子を紹介しましたが、今日はエナガの群れに交じってメジロがこれを食べに来ていました。長い嘴を使って鞘と茎の間を広げ、嘴を差し込んでカイガラモドキを食べているようです。動画も付けておきました。

I have posted a sparrow and a Siberian long-tailed rosefinch feeding on the Biwakokatakaigaramodoki (Nipponaclerda biwakoensis). Today several warbling white eyes, or mejiro, in Japanese, were among the long-tailed tit (Aegithalos caudatus) in the reedy field. They use their long sharp beaks to pry-open the sheath and pick up the hiding insects. Enjoy the moving picture.

ヨシ原のベニマシコ：Siberian long-tailed rosefinch (Carpodacus sibiricus) in the reedy field

Rosefinches are basically herbivores, but occasionally they forage on insects. I witnessed them hunting the biwakokatakaigaramodoki on which I posted yesterday in the reedy field. They must be high in calory and protein that keep the birds going strong in the bitter coldness of winter.

ベニマシコの冬越しの食料としては、これまでセイタカアワダチソウ、カナムグラ、イノコズチ、ヤナギの冬芽などを観察してきました。どちらかと言えば植物食です。しかし、体を維持するため、また冬越しのカロリーを確保するためにはタンパク質豊富な食べ物も必要です。昨日紹介した、スズメやエナガが食べているビワコカタカイガラモドキを、ベニマシコも食べている様子を観察することができました。この場所では、通常主としてイノコズチを食べているようですが、時折ヨシ原に出てきて、カイガラモドキを食べています。嘴をカイガラモドキの出す蝋物質で白くしている様子が見て取れます。

ビワコカタカイガラモドキ：Biwakokatakaigaramodoki (Nipponaclerda biwakoensis)

In yesterday's posting, I wrote that birds are eating scale insects. To be exact, their name is Biwakokatakaigaramodoki (Nipponaclerda biwakoensis). They hide themselves on the stem of the reeds under the leaf sheath. When I peeled off the sheath, I found 11 insects hiding in one place. They seem to be cheesy and looks good.

昨日の投稿で、野鳥たちが食べているものを「カイガラムシ」と書きましたが、正しくは「ビワコカタカイガラモドキ」のようです。ヨシなど水辺の背の高いイネ科単子葉植物の茎と葉鞘の間で冬越しをするカイガラムシの一種です。冬を日本で過ごす小鳥たちの重要な食料になっていて、これまで観察しただけでも、エナガ、ホオジロ、スズメ、シジュウカラ、メジロ、カワラヒワ、ウグイス、アオジなどが盛んに食べています。

下の写真は葉鞘をはがしたところで、上の写真には2匹（正面に1匹、上部に半分隠れてもう1匹）、下の写真には一箇所に実に11匹が隠れていました。

スズメが葉鞘をはがし、頭を葉鞘と茎の間に挟み込んで、カイガラムシモドキを探しています。
