When I was in New England, hummingbirds used to visit from early summer to early fall. I read that they came from as far away as Mexico to the northern United States. Unfortunately, there are no hummingbirds in Japan. Instead, we have a variety of sparrowhawk moths that are active during the day. The two most common species are the oosukashiba (Cephonodes hylas) with its transparent wings, and the hoshihoujaku hawkmoth (Macroglossum pyrrhosticta) with its yellow patterned hind wings.
The oosukashibas are larger, and when nectaring, they gently place their paws on the flower to stabilize themselves. On the other hand, the hoshihoujakus fly freely from flower to flower with their legs tightly attached to their bodies. Their reflexes and flying ability are nothing short of amazing. On this particular day, there were about 20 hoshihoujakus and a few oosukashibas nectaring on five thick growths of abelia plants.
