飼育記録：オオスカシバ：羽化のピーク

I have been taking care of more than 20 coffee bee hawkmoths, or Cephonodes hylas, a very charming species of hawkmoths. Its Japanese name is Oosukashiba, literally, a big moth with translucent wings. They voraciously feed on the gardenia shrubs, or Gardenia jasminoides, planted in the commons gardens, so whenever they are found they are either picked or sprayed. I took pity on them and launched a rescue mission. I had to feed them with the gardenia, harvesting them from the riverbank 3 miles away. They grew and there emerged more than 15 and the rest are happily preparing for the adventurous journey ahead. They usually enclose themselves in very thin cocoons, but one of them created a kind of open cocoon. This is the first of its kind, so I thought it is quite interesting.

オオスカシバが羽化のピークを迎えています。今朝は3匹が羽化しました。すでに羽化した数は15匹を超えているでしょう。あまり多いので、勘定するのを止めてしまいました。ただし、蛹化から羽化に至る日数はかうんとしています。現在の季節ではほぼ2週間という結果が出ています。今のところ病気になったものも寄生虫にやられたものもなく、すべて見事な成虫になっています。ジャコウアゲハと共に、オオスカシバの増加にも少しは貢献できたかもしれません。

オオスカシバは、薄い繭を作ります。ほとんどの個体は、敷いてあるキッチンペーパーと容器の間に繭を作るのですが、この個体はなぜか敷紙から外れたところに繭を作り、オープンエアーの形になってしまいました。なかなかユニークです。2019.10.02.撮影

こちらはヒメアカタテハのために用意したヨモギに潜って繭を作った個体です。今朝羽化しました。本来は枯れ葉などを利用してこのような繭を作るのだと思います。2019.09.28.撮影

すべての蛹が羽化してしまうと、さみしくなるでしょうね。
