三川合流冬芽の勉強：Winter buds and leaf marks found at the confluence of three rivers

三川合流に一日遊びました。目的はゴマダラチョウの幼虫の観察ですが、ついでに冬芽と葉痕を観察してきました。それほど樹種の多くない場所ですが、個々の木々、個々の枝にはそれぞれの表情があります。

マティスの絵画を思わせるアカメガシワ。

ヒツジか猿か、オニグルミ。

シンジュの当年枝。1メートル半ほど伸びるものもあります。

近年増えてきたカジノキ。

今年の実りが良かったツルウメモドキ。これは雄株です。

安らぎの庭にて冬芽の観察：Observing winter buds at the garden near Saiho-ji temple

鈴虫寺と西芳寺の中程、西芳寺川のほとりに「安らぎの庭」という小さな公園がある。もともと個人の庭だったのだろうか、小さな公園には不釣り合いに見えるナナミノキやエノキの巨木を囲むように、ユキヤナギ、ガマズミ、アジサイなどが植栽され細い流れが中程を通っている。地図を見ると、この流れは西芳寺の黄金池から流れ出た者のようだ。間口の比較的狭い小さな公園なので、観光客は一瞥するだけでほとんど足を踏み入れることもないが、四季折々に木々が芽を出し花を付ける。昆虫の影は余り濃くないが、今年はベッコウハゴロモやツマグロオオヨコバイ、ハンミョウなどの姿をじっくりと観察できた。訪なう人が少ないので、草木や昆虫をじっくりと長時間撮影していても、不審に思われることがない。この日は冬芽と葉痕をいくつかの樹木で観察してみた。

注意深く見ると、冬芽に大きなアブラムシが、また葉痕下にアブラムシの卵が産み付けられている。

ノイバラの葉痕と冬芽：Multiflora rose (Rosa multiflora)

ノイバラの葉痕と冬芽です。ノイバラは冬を通じて葉を付けている場合もあります。葉痕は細長くて目立ちません。それよりも、葉を落とした茎には逆刺がびっしり。しかし、よく観察すると、不規則に生えているのではなく、芽を守るように冬芽の脇に対になって生えています。アカシアなどは托葉が変形して棘になっていますが、バラの場合は、茎が変形した物だそうです（刺状突起体）。しかしながら、同じような位置に生えて、植物体を支えるだけではなく、冬芽を守るように生えているのは不思議です。

These are the leaf scars and winter buds of the Noibara (Multiflora rose). The leaf scars are long and thin and not noticeable. The stems, which have lost their leaves, are covered with reverse thorns. However, if you observe carefully, you will see that they are not irregular, but grow in pairs beside the winter buds as if to protect the buds. In the case of acacias, the mendicant leaves are deformed into spines, but in the case of roses, the spines are deformed stems (spikelets). However, it is interesting that they grow in similar positions, not only to support the plant body, but also to protect the winter buds.

ノブドウの葉痕と冬芽：Nobudou (Ampelopsis glandulosa var. heterophylla)

ノブドウが木本であることに気づいたのは今年になってからでした。太く逞しい巻きひげが、冬を貫く強い生命力を宿していることから気づきました。そのノブドウが葉を落とし蔓だけになっています。その葉痕の大きいこと。大きな葉を広げ夏の間にたっぷりと養分を作り、茎に蓄え、秋の到来と共に用済みの葉をきれいさっぱり捨て去る。潔さが見事です。

It wasn't until this year that I realized that the Nobudou (ampelopsis) is a woody plant. I noticed the plant has thick and strong curly tendrils (cirri) that gave it a strong life force to carry it through the winter. In the beginning of December, the plant has lost its leaves and is now just a vine. The leaf scars are huge. It spreads its large leaves, produces plenty of nutrients during the summer, stores them in the stems, and then discards the used leaves when autumn arrives. It's graceful determination is magnificent.

ムクノキの葉痕と冬芽：Mukunoki (Muku tree (Aphananthe aspera))

ムクノキの葉痕と冬芽です。葉痕は黒地に維管束の痕が白く出るのが特徴的。冬芽は他の樹木に比べて先の尖った卵形です。花が目立たないので見逃しがちですが、今年の春はしっかり観察することができました。このリンクから花を見ることができます。

The following pictures are of the leaf traces and winter buds of Muku-no-ki. The leaf traces are black with white vascular bundle marks. The winter buds are egg-shaped but more pointed than those of other trees. The flowers bloom in spring, but they are inconspicuous, so it is easy to miss them. 冬芽の勉強：サンゴジュ

サンゴジュはつややかな新緑の葉の美しさやその名前の元になった真っ赤な実で目を引きますが、サンゴジュハムシ（サンゴジュウスバヒゲナガハムシ）の食害が甚だしく、夏のうちに相当が食害を受け、きれいな葉を秋の終わりまで見ることができません。しかしながら、その葉痕の維管束痕が、人の顔の形になり、結構かわいらしく見えます。道端でこれをルーペで観察したり、しゃがみ込んで撮影していると、かなり怪しい人に思われそうです。日陰に植えられ、葉も茎もがぼろぼろにされたサンゴジュの、頑張って生きているしるしを撮してみました。一つ一つが個性的です。
