イチゴの葉のマイン：Eating marks on berry leafs

木イチゴの葉に、おそらく蛾の幼虫のマインを見つけました。マインとは、昆虫の幼虫が食べ進んだ食痕です。特に葉の中で食べ進むものをマインと呼びます。英語ではこのような食痕を残す虫をリーフマイナーと呼び、害虫予防の研究対象になっています。野外観察者にとっては、マインの作り出す独特の模様は、興味深い観察対象となります。これらのマインは、同一の蛾の幼虫によって作られたもののようで、この木には秋に葉を丸める幼虫が多数いたことを思い出すと、それらの幼虫のせいかもしれません。

I found several leaf mines, probably by moth larvae, on the leaves of the berry tree. A mine is an eating mark made by the larva of an insect. Especially those that eat their way through the thin leaves are called "miners". In English, insects that leave such feeding marks are called leafminers, and are the subject of research for pest prevention. The unique patterns produced by the mines are an interesting object of study for the field observer.

ナスカの地上絵

世の中にはまだまだ不思議で面白いものがあるものです。今日はナスカの地上絵とおぼしきものを葉っぱの中に見つけました。正体は（おそらく）蛾の幼虫の食痕。葉の中に入り込んで付けた食痕（マイン）です。左上の方に産み付けられた卵が孵って、葉の中を食べ進みながら糞をして、その後が線状に残ったものと思われます。これほどきれいな文様は初めて見ました。不思議で面白い現象でした。

There are still some strange and interesting things in the world. Today I found what seems like a Nazca Lines on a leaf of a tree. It is (probably) a larval food mark (mine) of a kind of moth. An egg laid on the upper left side of the leaf have hatched, and the larvae have eaten and defecated in the leaf, leaving behind a linear pattern. This is the first time I have seen such a beautiful pattern.
