嵐山近郊の野鳥たち：Wild birds around Arashiyama, Kyoto

Today is the beginning of Daikan, the coldest 15 days of the year according to the twenty-four divisions of the four seasons. Just as the calendar says, it was freezing, snowy wind blowing hard from the north. It must be quite eccentric to go watching wild birds under this weather. But I was one of them.

大寒のこの日、野鳥観察に出かけました。今日から大寒。北からは吹雪が吹き付け、なかなかの野鳥観察日和でした。ほどほどで引き上げたのですが、後で知り合いから連絡があり、もう少し上流にはオシドリが7羽ほどいたそうで、ちょっと残念。

コゲラかと思って撮ったらアオゲラでした。

キセキレイ。

ウグイスのようです。

センダンの実を飲むヒヨドリ。

こちらムクドリ。

1月中にセンダンの実を食べ始めるのは、餌の少ない証拠でしょうね。

シロハラとマンリョウ：Pale thrush and coral bush (Ardisia crenata)

シロハラが万両の実を食べていました。万両は林縁にしばしば見る灌木で、おめでたいとされる木ですが、野鳥がこの実を食べているところはあまり頻繁に目にしていません。万両の赤い実は初夏の万両の花が咲く頃まで見ることができます。ひょっとしたら、細い花柄の先端に付く実のなり方が野鳥にとっては実を食べにくいのかもしれませんね。

A pale thrush is eating the fruit of manryo (coral bush, (Ardisia crenata)). Manryo is considered to be a tree of celebration or good luck, its name suggesting a big monetary unit (man: 10000, and ryo: a large gold coin). I do not see the wild birds eating this fruit. Some of the fruit remain on the tree until autumn. However, this pale thrush is fond of this fruit. The way the tree bears its fruit (the fruit is produced at the tip of a thin flower stalk) may make it difficult for wild birds to eat the fruit.

シャシャンボとシロハラ：Sea bilberry (Vaccinium bracteatum) and Pale thrush (Turdus pallidus)

山麓の公園のシャシャンボが熟し、野鳥が訪れています。頻繁に訪れるのは、ヒヨドリ、メジロ、そしてシロハラ。前2者が樹上の果実を食べるのに対して、シロハラはもっぱら落ちている実を食べています。シャシャンボはスノキ科の植物でブルーベリーの兄弟分。ビタミンたっぷり、アントシアニンたっぷり、この時期には甘みも増しているでしょう。シロハラは近づいても逃げる様子もなく、実をついばんでいました。

The Shashambo (Sea bilberry) in the park on the hill is ripening, and wild birds are visiting. The most frequent visitors are Hiyodori (brown-eared bulbul), White-eyes, and Pale thrushes. While the former two eat the fruit on the trees, the white thrush eats only the fallen fruit. Shashambo is a member of the Vaccinium family and is very close to blueberry. Fruits are full of vitamins and anthocyanins, and are probably sweeter this time of year. The the Pale thrush didn't seem to run away when I approached it, but was still pecking at the berries.

謹賀新年：近所の野鳥－シロハラ：Pale thrush (Turdus pallidus)

晦日の降雪は野や山を白く染めて、気持ちのよい新年になりました。初詣の人出は昨年よりかなり増えているようです。午後から亀山公園に出かけました。あまりめぼしい鳥はいませんでしたが、遭遇順に行くと、シロハラ、セグロセキレイ、アトリ、キセキレイ、コゲラなど、いつもの鳥達と会うことができました。シロハラをきちんと撮影できたのはこのシーズン初めてです。あまり人を恐れず、ナンテンの茂みの中で実をついばんでいました。意識的に自然観察を始めてかれこれ7年になります。今年もよい出会いがありますように。

The snowfall on New Year's Eve wrapped the fields and mountains white, a decoration for a pleasant New Year. The number of people visiting the shrine on New Year's Day seems to have increased considerably from last year. In the afternoon, I went to Kameyama Park. There were not many birds to be seen, but I was able to see the usual birds such as the pale thrush, brambling, Japanese wagtail, grey wagtail, and Japanese pygmy woodpecker. This was the first time this season that I was able to properly take a picture of a pale thrush. This particular bird was not too afraid of people and were picking berries in the nanten bush. It's been seven years since I started consciously observing nature. I hope to have good encounters with all the living things in my neighborhood this year.
