トラツグミのミミズ狩り（その2）：Scaly thrush hunting for earth worms

トラツグミのミミズ狩りについては、先日ポストしましたが、今日はミミズを飲むその早さに驚きました。使用しているカメラの撮影枚数は秒間約10コマ。ミミズをくわえてから飲み込み終わるまで15コマでしたので、約1.5秒で大きな太いミミズを飲み込み終えています。いったいどのようなメカニズムになっているのでしょうか。想像するに、舌をつかってぐいぐい押し込んでいると思うのですが、よくわかりません。不思議です。

I posted the other day about the scaly thrush hunting for worms, and today I was amazed at how quickly they swallow the worms. The camera I use takes about 10 frames per second. And it took 15 frames from the time the bird bites the worm to the time it finishes swallowing, so in about 1.5 seconds. The worm was a large, fat worm by any standard. What kind of mechanism does this bird use? I imagine that it uses its tongue to push the worm into the mouth, but I am not sure. It is a mystery.

トラツグミのミミズ狩り：Scaly thrush hunting earth worms

トラツグミの狩りを観察してみました。ミミズを主に食べていますが、果実も食べます。特にシャシャンボの果実は美味しいようで、地上に落ちたものを好んで食べています。ミミズは栄養価が高いのか、掘る際の迫力はすさまじいもので、高速で撮影した写真を見ると、ここぞと狙いを定めた場所で嘴を土の中に根元まで突っ込み、土塊が体の倍ほどの高さに飛び上がるほどの勢いで掘っています。比較的のんびりと動くトラツグミの、目にもとまらない早業です。

I observed scaly thrushes hunting. They mainly eat earthworms, but they also eat fruit. The Shashambo fruit seems to be their favorite, and they eat the ones that have fallen to the ground. They also like earthworms. Earthworms are highly nutritious and thrushes hunt them well and vigorously. In the photos taken at high speed, they plunge their beaks into the soil to the root and dig with such force that the clod flies up to twice the height of their bodies. It's an amazingly fast action by a relatively slow-moving bird.

うまくミミズを捕らえたところです。一日にいったい何匹食べるのでしょうか。

トラツグミ：Scaly thrushes in the nearby park

いつもの公園に今冬2羽のトラツグミが訪れ、楽しませてくれています。一方は若鳥なのか少し小さくて臆病、他方は恰幅のよい成鳥でミミズを狩るのが上手です。20分ほどの間に3匹の大きなミミズを食べました。人慣れしているのは観察に好都合なのですが、ちょっと心配なのが公園への猫の出入りで、餌付けをしている人がいるらしく、数匹の猫を見ます。野鳥への影響が気になります。

This winter two scaly thrushes have been visiting and entertaining us in the park nearby. One is a bit timid, perhaps a young bird, and the other is a fully-fledged adult bird that hunts earthworms very well. This one once hunted three large earthworms in the space of about 20 minutes.

こちらが若干臆病な方です。

こちらは大胆な方。かなり人慣れしています。

気になるのが野良猫の存在です。米国の統計資料では、年鑑24億羽の野鳥が猫の犠牲になっているとか。ちょっと信じられない数ですが。

トラツグミ：Scaly thrush (Zoothera dauma)

Scaly thrushes are known for their funny dance on the ground. I have posted the movie clip before. The behavior is considered to be the action to scare the earth worm to motion. Thrushes detect this motion and hunt them. It is known that earth worms, when they feel the vibration, move upward to the surface of the ground in order to avoid the possible attack of moles from below. Scaly thrushes are using the worm's instinctive reaction.

今年いつもの公園に到来したトラツグミは、1羽だけのようです。また、今年の個体はあまりダンスをしません。トラツグミのダンスについては以前の投稿をご覧下さい。写真には撮れませんでしたが、今日は越冬中のコガネムシの幼虫をいくつか捕らえていました。それにしても、どのようにして土中の虫の居場所を知ることができるのでしょうか。不思議です。

トラツグミは枯れ葉の背景に紛れて見事なカモフラージュ。上の写真のように背景が抜けていれば、見つけやすいのですが、下の写真のように見事に背景に溶け込んでいと、わざわざ探しに来た人も、見逃して素通りすることが多いです。

トラツグミとクロジ：Scaly thrush (Turdus dauma) and Grey bunting (Emberiza variabilis)

A scaly thrush has arrived in the woods along the Katsura river. Since this year is the year of tiger according to the Chinese calendar and the scaly thrush is called toratsugumi (tiger thrush) in Japanese, this bird is fit for the new year. For this reason I have been waiting for the arrival.

ようやくトラツグミの姿を認めるようになりました。例年現れる林縁の場所です。昨年は姿を見なかったので、久々の出現は嬉しいです。寅年のトラツグミはおめでたいですね。今日はそのほか、クロジも今季初めて見ることができました。

トラツグミのダンス

今冬は驚くような暖冬で、今日も3月並みの陽気でした。渡り鳥たちも北方で十分に冬越しできるせいか、京都地方で見られる冬鳥は、例年に比べるとかなり少なめに感じます。本来この季節に来るトラツグミもまだ姿を見ていません。そこで過去の画像を掘り出してビデオ観察してみます。

トラツグミは、頭と足を固定して、体を揺する「トラダンス」を踊ります。踊るといっても、エンタメのために踊るのではなく、餌捕りの手段のようです。いろいろな説がありますが、体を揺する際に生じる振動が、ミミズを驚かせて、その動きを察知して捕るのだとか。2017年に撮影した映像で検証します。

1:09の付近でトラツグミが何かを地面から掘り出して食べたようです。静止画を切り出してみます。

細いミミズをつまみ出して食べています。

モグラもミミズを捕る際に、掘ったトンネルの中で振動を起こし、それに驚いたミミズがトンネルの中に落ちてくるのを補食すると読んだことがあります。

一件愉快なトラダンスですが、地中のミミズや隠れた虫などを追い出すための、巧みな戦略なのかもしれません。
