トラツグミのミミズ狩り（その2）：Scaly thrush hunting for earth worms

トラツグミのミミズ狩りについては、先日ポストしましたが、今日はミミズを飲むその早さに驚きました。使用しているカメラの撮影枚数は秒間約10コマ。ミミズをくわえてから飲み込み終わるまで15コマでしたので、約1.5秒で大きな太いミミズを飲み込み終えています。いったいどのようなメカニズムになっているのでしょうか。想像するに、舌をつかってぐいぐい押し込んでいると思うのですが、よくわかりません。不思議です。

I posted the other day about the scaly thrush hunting for worms, and today I was amazed at how quickly they swallow the worms. The camera I use takes about 10 frames per second. And it took 15 frames from the time the bird bites the worm to the time it finishes swallowing, so in about 1.5 seconds. The worm was a large, fat worm by any standard. What kind of mechanism does this bird use? I imagine that it uses its tongue to push the worm into the mouth, but I am not sure. It is a mystery.
