ニホンカナヘビ

ニホンカナヘビが草の上で休んでいました。休むというよりは獲物の出現を待っていたのかもしれません。しかし、陽光に照らされて、時々眼をつむっているところを見ると、やはりゆったりと休んでいるのでしょう。京都地方のトカゲとしては、この茶色く鱗に光沢のないカナヘビと、鱗に光沢があり、幼体の体が虹色に光るニホントカゲを見かけます。

A Japanese kanahebi (Japanese grass lizard, Takydromus tachydromoides) was resting on the grass. It may have been waiting for its prey to appear. However, when I saw that it sometimes closed its eyes in the sunlight, it must be resting comfortably. In the Kyoto area, there are two types of lizards: this brown kanahebi, whose scales are not shiny, and the Japanese lizard (nihon tokage, Plestiodon japonicus), whose scales are shiny and whose juveniles have iridescent skins.
