ハナミズキの紅葉

かつての同僚でバージニア州立大学に留学していた方に、ハナミズキの紅葉のことを話す機会がありました。ハナミズキはバージニア州の州花です。留学時代からよく知った花ということでしたが、彼女はハナミズキが紅葉することに驚いていました。ハナミズキは、春に咲く大輪の花もそうですが、秋に実る赤くつややかな実と、鮮やかな紅葉で印象的です。おそらく彼女が過ごしたバージニア州は、秋の紅葉が楽しめるほど秋の冷え込みがきつくはなかったのでしょうか。毎年紅葉の写真を送らねば、と思っているうちに、30年あまりが経ってしまいました。このブログを見てくれると良いのですが。

先般訪れた宝ヶ池の花水木の紅葉です。

I once talked to a colleague of mine who studied at University of Virginia about the red leaves of the dogwood tree. Dogwood is the state flower of Virginia. She was surprised to learn that dogwood trees turn red in autumn. The dogwood tree is charming not only for its large flowers in the spring, but also for its glossy red berries and its bright red leaves in the fall. Perhaps Virginia, being a southern state, was not cold enough in the fall to enjoy the autumn colors. It's been way over a decade since I decided to send her a photo of red dogwood leaves. I hope she is reading this blog.
