It's November and the mornings and evenings are getting colder. In the midst of all this, a swallowtail came to the balcony to suck nectar from the pentas flowers. It visits us around noon when it gets warm. I deliberately planted pentas to attract butterflies. The same is true for the zinnia flower beside it. The zinnia was for the butterflies with short proboscises, while the pentas was for butterflies with long proboscises. At this time of year, as the wildflowers are dwindling, the late hatchlings are still flying around during the warm days, some of them lay eggs on the food trees. The year before last, we rescued a larva of a swallowtail butterfly from a lemon tree at the end of Christmas. Although this is a small balcony, by planting flowers that butterflies like to visit, there is a small biological haven kind to both the butterflies and sweet for the residents.
