ヒイラギモクセイ

近くの公園でヒイラギモクセイが満開です。ヒイラギモクセイは、日本固有種のヒイラギと、中国原産のギンモクセイの交雑によってできたと言われています。雄株のみが知られ、結実はしません。今日は枝がしなるほどの強風に吹かれていましたが、良い香りを漂わせていました。キンモクセイの香りよりは甘みが少ない、さわやかな香りです。花付きがよい枝は、初雪と見まごうばかりです。

The Hiiragimokusei (Osmanthus × fortunei) trees are in full bloom in a nearby park. The Hiiragimokusei is said to be the cross between the Japanese indigenous holly  ( Osmanthus heterophyllus), and the Chinese sweet olive (Osmanthus fragrans) which is native to China. Only male plants are known, and they do not bear fruit. Today, strong wind was blowing that made the branches sway, but the air was filled with sweet fragrance. It has a refreshing scent, less sweet than that of Kinmokusei (Osmanthus fragrans var. aurantiacus). The branch with the best flowers looks just like the first snow.
