The berries of the Shashambo, sea bilberry (Vaccinium bracteatum) tree in Kameyama Park have ripened to a black color. Shashambo is a member of the azalea family and is in the same family as blueberries. Some people call it the ”blueberry of the park”. It is an evergreen tree and can be recognized by the slight protrusion on the main vein on the underside of the leaf and the plum blossom shaped mark on the tip of the fruit. The fruits are still hard and sour, but they may become slightly sweet around the beginning of the year, and wild birds stop by to eat them. I'd like to try to pick up a sweetened one.
