ホオジロガモ2羽：Common golden eye (Bucephala clangula)

ホオジロガモを観察しました。京都市内では、数は少ないながらもホオジロガモが越冬します。雄1羽のこともあります。近年はメス1羽の越冬が多いのですが、今年は珍しくメス2羽の越冬を確認しました。これで雄が来てくれるとよいのですが。期待して待ちましょう。採餌の際には頻繁に潜水します。息継ぎ時間が短く、潜水時間が長いので、潜水の名手といっても良いでしょう。ものの本によれば、植物性のもの動物性のもの双方食べる雑食性のようですが、形になるものを加えて浮上するのはみたことがありません。あまり邪魔が入らずに春まで姿を見せて楽しませてくれることを祈ります。

We observed two golden eyes. In Kyoto City, golden eyes overwinter every year, though in small numbers. In the past years we enjoyed a visit of one male. In recent years, one female pay a visit, but this year, to our pleasant surprise, we observe two females overwintering. It would be nice if a male would come and join them. Let us wait in anticipation. When foraging, they dive frequently. The short breath-holding time and the long dive time make it a master diver. Bird books tell us that they are omnivorous, eating both plant and animal matter, but I have never seen them surface with anything in their beaks. I hope they will stay undisturbed and continue to show up and entertain us until spring.
