ジャケツイバラ：Jaketsuibara, shoofly (Caesalpinia decapetala var. japonica)

ジャケツイバラは、棘だらけの猛々しい樹皮から想像できない美しい花を咲かせ、美しさと猛々しさの対比が甚だしいので、私のお気に入りの樹木です。この木の成木を近くで観察することができました。樹皮の棘は、成木になると丸まってくるのだろうとの予測に反して、先端部は研ぎ澄まされた鷹の爪のように鋭く、周囲の木々に取り付こうとする意欲が満々です。老いてもなお鋭い知性を見るような気がします。

The shoofly or cat's claw is my favorite tree because it produces beautiful flowers that betrays its fierce bark full of thorns. The contrast between beauty and fierceness is enormous. I was able to observe a mature tree up close. Contrary to my expectation that the thorns on the bark would smooth up as the tree matures, the tips are as sharp as a sharpened falcon's talons, eager to attach themselves to the surrounding trees. I feel as if I am looking at an horned intelligence and wisdom in old age.
