春を迎えてアオジ（青鵐）も美しくなりました。アオジは黄色いお腹の印象が強い鳥ですが、名前には「青」の文字があります。一節によれば、古語の青は緑を意味し、アオジの体色、特に背中側から見た色が黄緑色なことと、一般にホオジロ類を「しとと」あるいは「しとど」と読んでいた「ジ」を受けて「アオジ」となったとか。ここ京都で越冬する際には、小さく「チッ、チッ」と鳴くだけで、目立つこともない鳥ですが、繁殖地では、枝頭で大きく美しくさえずるとか。一度聴いてみたいものです。
