ニワトコの開花：Flowering of Japanese red-berried elder tree

河畔林のニワトコが開花しました。花は円錐型の集合果で一つ一つの花はきわめて小さく、初夏に赤い実をつけます。かつてイギリスにいたときには、この花の実を集めて草木染めの原料にしている人を見たことがあります。中国や日本では、この木の樹皮を煎じた液を、骨折した部位の湿布材として使った事から、「接骨木」の漢字が当てられています。

Elder trees in the riverside forest have flowered. The flowers are cone-shaped, each of which is extremely small, and bear red berries in early summer. When I was in England, I saw people collecting the fruits of these flowers to use as materials for herb-dyeing. In China and Japan, the Chinese characters for "bonesetting tree" are derived from the fact that a poultice made by boiling the bark of this tree was used for broken bone setting.
