渡りの途中のヒヨドリ：Migratory Hiyodori, brown-eared bulbul (Hypsipetes amaurotis)

ヒヨドリの渡りの季節になりました。ヒヨドリは秋に国内の暖地に南下して越冬し、春先に再び北に帰ります。越冬中のヒヨドリは、数羽の群れでいることが多いですが、渡りの途中では大きな群れになり、関門海峡や津軽海峡を大群で渡る様子が報告されています。渡りの途中のヒヨドリは、大群で農作物に群がり、特に葉菜類を食害することが知られています。この画像では放棄された白菜を夢中になって食べている様子が見て取れます。農家としてもできるだけこのような放棄された葉菜類を畑に置いて、ヒヨドリの食害の対象を拡散すると良いのではないでしょうか。

It is the season for hiyodori migration. In autumn, hiyodori migrate south to warmer regions of Japan to overwinter, returning to the north again in early spring. While wintering, shorebirds are often in small flocks, but during their migration they form large flocks and have been reported crossing the Kanmon and Tsugaru Straits in large numbers, just like European starling. During their migration, these birds are known to swarm around crops, especially leafy greens. In the following photo, they are feeding enthusiastically on abandoned Chinese cabbage. For a farmer, it would be a good idea to place such abandoned leafy greens in the field as much as possible to diffuse the target of the hiyodori's feeding rampage.
