セミノハリセンボン（冬虫夏草）閲覧注意！

Perhaps because of the high precipitation this summer, I have had opportunities to see Purpureocillium takamizusanense, or Seminoharisenbon, in Japanese. The picture shows what I observed the other day. The whole body of a dead cicada is covered with numerous "conidiophores", 2-3 mm in length, resembling a needle with a bulging tip. In Japanese it is, literally, "a thousand needles of a cicadar". They are named after the needles they resemble.

I'm sure I've seen them before in my childhood, but back then I was so engrossed in catching live cicadas that I never paid attention to these dead cicadas. Actually, I was more interested in the living cicadas, and the dead ones gave me the creeps. In recent nature observation sessin I attened, I was told that it was a type of cordyceps, and when I learned its name, my curiosity got the better of me. I am not sure if it is a biocide or not.

今年の夏は降水量が多かったためか、セミノハリセンボンを見る機会が多いです。これは先日観察したもの。蝉の死がいの全身を覆って、長さ2～3ミリの、先端が膨らんだまち針のような「分生子束」を多数生じています。それを針に見立ててこの名前があります。

子供の頃にも見たことがあるのでしょうが、あの頃はもっぱら生きたセミ捕りに夢中でこのような蝉の亡骸には見向きもしませんでした。冬虫夏草の一種と言われ、名前を知ると、少し好奇心が頭をもたげてきます。殺生菌かどうかは、よくわかりません。
