早くも早贄

This is the season when you can feel the coolness in the morning and evening breezes. It's the season to see shrikes, but I think I've actually only heard them sing a couple of times. This morning, however, I saw evidence of the shrike's arrival. It was an early sacrifice, or "hayanie", in Japanese.

There is an adult moth stuck on the barbed wire at the top of the fence along the road. The shrike sticks some early sacrifices on this barbed wire every winter, but this is the first time I've seen an early sacrifice without even seeing it. 朝晩の風に冷涼さを感じる季節になりました。モズの姿を見る季節ですが、実際には鳴き声を2回ほど聞いただけのような気がします。ですが、今朝、モズの来訪の証拠を見ました。早贄です。

道路沿いのフェンスの最上段、有刺鉄線に蛾の成虫が刺してあります。この有刺鉄線には毎冬モズがいくつかの早贄を刺しますが、姿も認めないのに早贄とは、初めての経験です。

よく見ると、早贄されたのはホシホウジャクのようです。蛾の仲間のうちでも最も敏捷なホシホウジャクが捕らえられるとは、驚きです。ホシホウジャクは日中に活動するので、モズの標的になったのでしょうか。早贄第一号。昨年はカナヘビや沢山のバッタの早贄を見ました。今年はどのようなものを見せてくれるのでしょうか。

ちななみに、なぜモズが早贄をするかについては、一種の貯食行為らしく、2019年に研究論文が発表されています。
