Kajinoki (Broussonetia papyrifera), is a tree that is often planted in shrines. Offerings to gods were presented on its leaves and they were also used as a substitute for strips of paper for Tanabata Festival. It has also been used as a raw material for paper since ancient times, as have the kouzo and himekouzo trees of the same genus.
