実りの季節

The chestnut trees in the park where I usually take walks have started to bear fruit. This tree bears earlier than other chestnut trees (wild Shiba chestnuts), and its flesh is much larger. Chestnuts were one of the most important foods during the Jomon period, and at the Sannai-Maruyama site in Aomori Prefecture, where the Jomon culture of about 5,000 years ago can still be seen today, chestnuts that seem to have been bred and chestnut poles with a diameter of up to one meter have been unearthed, reaffirming the importance of chestnut trees to the people of the Jomon period.

いつも自然観察している公園の栗の木が実りの季節を迎えました。この木は他の栗の木（野生の柴栗）よりも実りが早く、かつ実が大きいです。丹波栗の系統でしょうか。まだイガが青い状態で落ちてきますが、割ってみると堅果の表皮はいかにも栗らしい焦げ茶色です。実の大きさばかりでなく、人が収穫しやすいように品種改良されているのでしょうか。柴栗などは樹上でイガが割れ、果実だけがこぼれて落ちてきます。

縄文時代には栗は重要な食料の1つであったことが知られており、約5000年前の縄文文化の様子を今に伝える青森県の三内丸山遺跡からは品種改良されたと思われる栗の実や、直径1mもある栗の柱が出土し、縄文時代人にとっての栗の木の重要性が見直されました。

話を戻しますが、この公園では新型コロナで散策する人も少なく、1時間おきに栗の木の下を通ると、そのたびごとに両手にいっぱいの実が採れます。おいしくいただきましょう！
