マムシとの遭遇

I flinched for a moment. I encountered a pit viper, mamushi, while taking a walk in the valley near my house. I've occasionally seen striped snakes here, but never a pit viper. Moreover, it was right on the slope of the forest path, within a short distance from where I would have bent down to reach for some rare mushrooms or plants. The pit viper is seen almost everywhere in Japan, and although the amount of venom is relatively small, the bite can sometimes be fatal. At first glance it looked like a slightly larger leaf or a stone as it coiled itself up and stayed quiet. Let the sleeping viper lie. I gently walked past it from a distance.

一瞬ひるみました。近郊の谷筋を散策途中にマムシに出会いました。ここでは時折シマヘビに会うことはあったのですが、マムシは初めてです。しかも林道の斜面すぐのところ、何か珍しいきのこなどがあれば身をかがめて手を伸ばす距離です。マムシはほぼ日本全土に分布していて、毒の量は比較的少ないですが、咬まれれば時に死に至ることもあります。

マムシは中型で比較的明るい色をしています。とぐろを巻いて大人しくしているので、一見少し大きめの木の葉あるいは石としか見えません。桑原桑原。そっと遠巻きにして通り過ぎました。
