ムラサキホコリ

林縁の倒木の上に、ムラサキホコリの新しく形成された子実体を見つけました。ムラサキホコリは変形菌の一種です。変形菌は例の南方熊楠が生涯かけて研究した生物で、菌類でありながら動物的振る舞いもする、不思議な生きものです。子実体の傍には、今夜のうちに子実体になるであろう変形体も見つけることができました。変形のプロセスを観察したくて持ち帰ろうと思ったのですが、手段がなくて、泣く泣くあきらめました。

I found a newly formed fruiting body of Stemonitis, murasakihokori in Japanese, on a fallen tree at the forest edge. Stemonitis is a genus of slime moulds. It's a strange creature, a kind of fungus that also behaves like an animal. . The great natural historian, Kumagusu Minakata, spent his life studying them. I found a young body of Stemonitis which will become a fruiting body that night. I wanted to take it home to observe the transformation process, but I had no way to do so, so I gave up the idea.
