チョウゲンボウ

上野橋付近にチョウゲンボウの姿を頻繁に見るようになりました。今日は鳩の群れに異様な雰囲気を感じて空を見上げると、上空にチョウゲンボウのホバリングしている姿を認めました。チョウゲンボウは小型の猛禽で、多くの場合はバッタなどの昆虫を捕食しますが、これまで野鳥ではカワラヒワ、大きなものではイソシギを捉えて丸ごと食べてしまうのを目撃したことがあります。猛禽の例に漏れず、視力は抜群で、20mほど離れた場所のバッタを急降下して捕らえるところも目撃しました。

かつて同僚のイギリス人に、チョウゲンボウのことを話すと、ケン・ローチ監督の「ケス」という作品があることを教えてもらい、DVDを購入して視聴しましたが、社会派の監督らしく、貧困問題をえぐる作品で、少年とチョウゲンボウの友情が最後に悲劇に終わる部分は見ていて大変つらいものがありました。

I have started to see a kestrel frequently near Kamino Bridge. Today, I felt a sudden turbulance among a flock of pigeons, and when I looked up at the sky, I recognized a hovering kestrel in the sky. It is a small bird of prey, often preying on insects such as grasshoppers, but I have witnessed it catch and eat a kawarahiwa, an Oriental greenfinch, and an isoshigi, a common sandpiper, in the wild. As is usual with birds of prey, they have excellent eyesight, and I even witnessed them swoop down and catch a grasshopper from about 20 meters away.

When I mentioned the kestrel to a colleague from England, she told me about a film called "Kes" directed by Ken Loach, and I bought the DVD and watched it. Roach is a socially concerned director, and his films are about poverty in the working class, and the part where the friendship between a boy and a kestrel ends in tragedy was very painful to watch.
