名前が可愛らしくないので、名前を聞いただけで毛嫌いする人もいるでしょうね。小さな小さな苔類です。渓流沿いの湿気のある場所で、常緑樹の葉表などに生えています。こすると、独特のサロメチールのような匂いがするので、すぐにそれとわかります。葉が落葉すれば葉と共に落ちて朽ちるので、常に世代交代しているようです。こんなちっぽけな苔ですが、『京都府レッドデータブック2015』では、絶滅危惧種の扱いになっています。
Kabigoke, literally, mould moss (Leptolejeunea elliptica)--the name is not pretty, and some people will probably hate it just by hearing the name. It is a tiny little moss species. It grows in moist places along mountain streams, on the leaf surface of evergreen trees. When rubbed, it gives off a distinctive salomethyl-like odor that is easy to recognize. When the leaves fall, it falls along with the leaves, so it seems to be constantly changing generations. This tiny moss is listed as an endangered species in the Kyoto Red Data Book 2015.
