ガマズミの実

西芳寺に近い小さな公園でガマズミの実が美しく色づいています。熟れた実は果実酒やジャムなどにして楽しむことができます。また、この木の枝は柔らかく折れにくいので、枝をよじって、刈柴などをまとめるのに使ったとのことです。私も子供の頃、山に入って芝刈りの手伝いをしましたが、葉の広い木を切って、それで刈り柴をくくり、手元をねじって差し込むことで、天然の荒縄とした覚えがあります。何の木だったかと、時々思い出してはいるのですが、その木がガマズミだったのかもしれません。

The fruits of the Gmazumi, linden arrowwood (Viburnum dilatatum), are beautifully colored in a small garden near Saihoji Temple. The ripe fruits can be made into fruit wine or jam.The fibrous branches of this tree are supple and hard to break, so people used the branches to bind bush clippings. When I was a child, my family and I went into the mountains to cut the bush for fire, and I remember, to tie the cutting together, we used a baranch of a certain tree with wide leaves. The branch, once twisted and with its end inserted, made itself a natural tough rope. I sometimes wonder what kind of tree it was, but now I think it might have been a Gmazumi.
