この季節になると、ワタムシの姿を見ます。ワタムシはアブラムシの有翅形で、秋の終わりに発生し、浮遊しながら冬越しの樹木などに産卵、あるいは出産します。綿のように見えるのは体から蝋物質の細毛を出しているからです。ゆっくり浮遊するので、捕まえやすいのですが、なかなか葉に止まってくれず、追いかけてようやく観察できた個体の写真です。
At this time of the year, I often see wooly aphids floating around. A wooly aphid, or Watamushi, or Yukimushi in Japanese is a winged form of the aphid that emerges at the end of autumn and floats around in the air. Aphids are leaving their summer habitat to look for places, mostly proper tree branches, for laying eggs that survive through winter. They look like cotton because of the waxy hairs they produce on their bodies. They are easy to catch because they float slowly, but since they constantly move and fly around, it is rather difficult to capture their clear images.
