タマミズキの果実

昨日の例会で訪れた東山のトレイルで、タマミズキの葉付きの果実を拾いました。西山と同じ樹木が東山の丘陵にも生息しているということの証拠です。直径3ミリほどの小さな実ですが、中には6個の種子があり、種子はそれなりの果肉に覆われています。極小の種子が巨木となることに改めて驚きます。種子の写真のマス目は0.625ミリですので、4マスで2.5ミリです。

I picked up some leafy fruits of the Tamamizuki (Ilex micrococca) tree on the Higashiyama trail we walked during yesterday's excursion. This proves that the same tree that lives in Nishiyama (West Hills) also lives in the hills of Higashiyama (East Hills). The fruit is tiny, about three millimeters in diameter, but there are six seeds inside, and the seeds are covered with a good amount of pulp. Once again, I am amazed at how a tiny seed can become a giant tree. The grid in the photo of the seeds are 0.625 mm each, so 4 grids make up 2.5 mm.
