It's the season to see Kuchibenitake mushrooms at the forest edge. This mushroom is often found in the fall in gouges in the soil such as cuttings in the forest. The mushroom is characterized by its small round shape (about 1.5 cm in diameter), reddish-orange color, and star-shaped spore-spreading holes. It gets its name, Kuchibenitake, or literally, lipstick mushroom, from the shape and color of these pores. When mature, a slight push will release spores like smoke. It is similar to the Hokoritake mushroom, or common pufball (Lycoperdon perlatum) but while the Hokoritake mushroom produces spores from one central location, the Kuchibenitake mushroom seems to spread spores from multiple locations, probably due to its irregularly shaped spore-spreading holes. I learned that it is an endemic species in Japan.
