ツクバネの果実: Tsukubane (Buckleya lanceolata)

　林縁に生えていて今年何度か観察してきたツクバネを見に行きました。果実は熟して黒く、果実に付いている羽根様の苞も茶色に変わっています。一枝取ろうとした際に枝に触れて揺れたとたんに20個ほどあった果実がすべて落下してしまいました。う～ん、残念！樹上の果実を撮影できませんでした。

　地上に落ちた果実はと言えば、これがまた見つけにくい。落ちた瞬間に周囲の落ち葉や枯れ草に同化したようで、探すのに苦労しました。それでも4個ほど見つけてカメラに収めましたが、完熟した果実の振る舞いに気をつけねばならないという教訓になりました。

　ツクバネは雌雄異株の半寄生植物です。針葉樹に寄生するので、周囲を見ると、ヒマラヤスギ、杉、檜などの植林がなされています。雄木を探しましたが、周囲には見あたりませんでした。しかし結実するところを見ると、遠からぬところにあるのでしょうね。

    I went to see the Tsukubane tree (Buckleya lanceolata), which I have observed several times this year at the edge of the forest. The fruit was ripe and black, and the feather-shaped bracts attached to the fruit had turned brown. When I tried to touch the fruit, the branch  shook, and all of the 20 or so fruits fell off. Hmmm, too bad! I couldn't take a picture of the fruit on the tree.

    As for the fruits that fell on the ground, they were most difficult to find. They seemed to have merged into the surrounding fallen leaves and dead grass the moment they fell. Even so, I found about four of them and captured them on my camera, which taught me a lesson that I should be most careful about the behavior of ripe fruits.

    Tsukubane is a dioecious, semi-parasitic plant. It lives with coniferous trees, so when I looked around, I saw plantations of Himalayan cedar, cedar, and cypress. I looked for male trees, but could not find any around. However, since I saw it fruiting, male plant must be not far from here.
