This is a winter bud of Nejiki. It has a large leaf scar and grows straight, giving it a neat appearance. A shoot of this tree is a favorite material for flower arrangement. However, it is poisonous like its azalea family relative, Asebi, or Japanese andromeda (Pieris japonica subsp. japonica), and deer do not like to eat it. Therefore, it is one of the "survivors" in the parks at the foot of the mountains.
