We have begun to see yellow-winged Asian comma in the fields. It is one of the first butterflies that overwinter and appears early in spring in Kyoto. Although there are still few flowers for nectaring, they fly around energetically, looking for mates and occasionally spreading their wings in the sunlight to keep their bodies warm. We have also begun to see the wintering kitakicho (common glass yellow, (Eurema hecabe)), and the small white (Pieris rapae) butterflies are also flying around. A handful of dandelions blooming on the southern slope of the embankment provide a valuable feeding ground for these butterflies.
