コセンダングサの花にウラナミシジミが吸蜜しています。この蝶は熱帯性の蝶で、関西での越冬は和歌山県の南端が北限だとか。冬を越えた個体は、世代交代を繰り返しながら、9月頃に京都地方に至ります。したがって、京都ではこの蝶は秋の蝶です。その後寒さが厳しくなる冬が到来すると、卵、幼虫、サナギ、成虫、すべて死に絶えます。この個体も命を次の世代につなぐことはできずに死ぬことになります。個としての命を種が乗り越える昆虫です。
自分の命が間もなく絶えることを知らずに、ひたすら生の営みに従事する小さな昆虫の姿に胸を打たれます。
Uranamishijimi (Lampides boeticus) is nectoring on Kosendangusa (Bidens pilosa var. pilosa). This butterfly is a southern species, and the southern tip of Wakayama Prefecture is said to be the northern limit for wintering in Kansai. After the winter, the species goes through a series of generational changes until they reach the Kyoto area around September. Therefore, in Kyoto, this butterfly is an autumn butterfly. When winter comes, the eggs, larvae, pupa, and adults all die out. This particular individual will also die without being able to pass on its life to the next generation. This is an insect in which the species as a whole overcomes each lindividual's life.
I am struck by the sight of the tiny insect engaged in the activities of life, unaware that their own lives will soon expire.
