The berries of the Akane, or Indian madders (Rubia argyi), growing on the embankment have ripened. The akane is a perennial vine in the family Rubiaceae. It was once an important plant in Japan as a dying agent. Its roots were collected at the end of autumn and used for this purpose. Akane-iro is the color of the morning sun coming up in vermilion, giving a sense of vitality. Akane also appears in waka poetry as a "pillow word" to emphasize brightness, as in "Akane sasu. In the Manyoshu, there are thirteen poems in which Akane is mentioned.
